JOE WATCHES A MOVIE : GANGSTER SQUAD

Well ladies and gentlemen once again we are treated to another movie that didn't live up to its hype.  Hence forth  we  once again  fooled by the power of video editing.  Yeah, it can be a cruel mother and we are the easy suckers.  As a result we are treated to a total mess with a horrendous script that mirrors that of The Untouchables,

 Boardwalk Empire,

 and LA Confidential.

In actuality these gumbshoes look like cardboard cutout carciactures out of a Dick Tracy Animated Cartoon.

"OKAY ESCAPES THIS IS THE POLICE DROP EVERYTHING"

Nothing is original here that hasn't been done before like when Elliot Ness and Co take down Al Capone and the Outfit in The Untouchables.

Speaking of caricatures first look at this picture of Jessica Rabbit

Now look at this picture of Emma Stone.

DEAD SEXY YES!  Still, I mean how lame and obvious can you get ?

(pondering) "Gee let me think when was the last time I saw a luscious damsel in distress willing to switch sides for the common good".

WHY ITS BREATHLESS  MAHOONEY from DICK TRACY! WE HAVE OURSELVES A COPYCAT HUSSIE!

TO PUT IT BLUNTLY...it's the fact that is this a  typical Crime Stoppers movie is what drives a juicy dagger right through the heart of this movie

SEE.....EVEN MICHAEL KNOWS! BOOOO- HAA HA HA!

Don't get me wrong  I think this film would have been better off if it would have been more about Mickey Cohen's rise and fall rather than the G-Men who set out to carve....him...out.

After all, they picked a great actor to lead the charge as the main villain in Sean Penn.   Sean Penn stars as the legendary in your face, hot shot, gangster Mickey Cohen who did Gangster-ism his way or no way in LA.

He was a force of nature in this movie the guy who in one minute could turn in a blink of an eye

Josh Brolin although an extremely great actor like a fine wine gets better in each movie plays Sgt. John O'Mara who really resembles a cardboard cut out of Kevin Costner's portrayal of Elliot Ness in The Untouchables.

John O'Mara promises his wife that he will play it safe and not let himself get too involved but then does exactly the opposite when he forms his own MOB SQUAD under the orders of  Chief Parker (Nick Nolte) .

When I first viewed this trailer I saw a wonderful ensemble of talented actors in a movie about another group of crimebusters which sounded like a good idea .

Given the fact you would had a colorful director in Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and skilled actors in Penn, Gosling, Brolin, Nolte, Mackie, and Pena.   However, when mixed with a stereotypical mobster script,  a predictable plot, and one-dimensional characters you can pretty much write off the chain events from start to finish without even breaking a sweat.

Part of the reason this film stinks is that set design resembles something out of the Great Movie Ride At Walt Disney World .

It may have worked for Warren Beatty and Co for Dick Tracy in the 1990s but in the world of CGI they can do so much better.

I feel as if all heads of production were not on the same page with this one.  Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling wanted to make an old fashion crime stopper flick

while Ruben Flesicher wanted to do Scarface 1932

The question is with this movie on a runaway train to predictability it left all the Hollywood movie  minds thinking which direction do we go in? Well HEY if they don't know HOW ARE WE SUPPOSE TO KNOW?

What we do know is we've seen this kind of flick before and none of us are impressed.

FINAL RATING: 1/5 (Only give the rating based on the acting and nothing more)
